7 Lessons Learned | Rinad Beidas, PhD
In this episode, we hear from Dr. Rinad Beidas, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Medical Ethics & Health Policy, and Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She works to improve the quality of health and mental health services by promoting evidence-based practices in routine care.
Dr. Beidas shares her journey growing up, handling family expectations, and finding her passion for accessible treatment (1:00-13:05). She talks about the impact of her personal life with family and mental health on her work (13:05) as well as advice on increasing your productivity (15:20) and networking as a young researcher (17:40). Finally, she gives us her 7 lessons learned as a scientist (24:40) as well as a call to action to use our positions in academia to advocate for social justice (34:10).
PhDemystified invites faculty from the University of Pennsylvania to open up about the unspoken struggles of becoming a scientist with interviewers who themselves are early-career researchers. Hosted by MindCORE (the mind and brain center for outreach, research, and education at the University of Pennsylvania), PhDemystified aims to create open dialogue around becoming and being a scientist, as inspired by the worldwide conversation series “Growing Up in Science” from NYU.
